Health Services Assistance (assisting in Nursing Work in Acute Care) (AIN) is a physically demanding career which provides assistance to professional healthcare staff for the care of clients.

You will have direct contact with clients and assist them with personal care, communication, mobility and rehabilitation. You will be required to implement programs and procedures to maximise client wellbeing. Acting as an assistant to a nurse, your working environment can be varied. You may need to work shift hours and will need to use equipment designed for manual handling. This course has a focus on mental health and also includes units for the Assistant in Nursing Specialisation for acute care settings.

When you complete this course, you will be ready for a career in Health services. You will have the skills and knowledge to assist health staff in the provision of services to client/patients within a health care setting. You will learn about teamwork and effective communication, infection control processes and procedures, and basic medical terminology. You will also learn skills to assist with clients and provide support to nursing team in an acute care environment.

Students will be required to complete Blocks of clinical work placement in a range of settings that South Regional TAFE will arrange for students. Please see the Work Placement Bulletin (opens in a new tab) for further information. 

Please be aware vaccinations may be an employment requirement for many healthcare providers. SRTAFE students undertaking work placements or who are required to attend a healthcare or community setting as part of their studies are advised to check directly with the healthcare provider regarding their policy settings around vaccination and proof of vaccination requirements.
