Robert’s positive impact continues to make a difference in school

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

South West Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year Robert Jones is already using the skills he gained during his training at TAFE in his role at Maidens Park Primary School.

Robert was recently presented with the 2020 Award by Lesley Nelson of South West Aboriginal Medical Service and Craig Sell of Breakaway Aboriginal Corporation, representing the sponsors.

Robert, who completed Certificates III and IV in Education Support, now works as an Aboriginal education officer at the school.

Robert is thoroughly enjoying his work and says he wants to make a difference to the lives of the students there.

“I have already been working with Noongar Elders and getting them involved in helping our students,” Robert said.

“I want to teach them about the importance of family, being on country and learning language.”

He said he felt humbled and very grateful to receive the award.

"It's an honour."

Robert is also planning on using his TAFE qualification to help him gain entry to university, where he wants to study teaching.

His Education Support lecturer Chris Gribble said Robert was an amazing person to have in the classroom as he was always willing to share his knowledge and experience with other students.

The college’s Aboriginal Programs team said they had seen Robert blossom into a confident communicator and a wonderful advocate for Aboriginal people.
