GovHack TAFE students receive national recognition

South Regional TAFE’s students were recognised for their savvy and creative IT skills on a national stage at an award ceremony in Canberra in November.

Teams of Bunbury and Albany TAFE students who participated in the GovHack event have gone on from the regional level competition to receive an honourable mention at the state award level. Their results were recognised out of 241 teams and more than 1000 participants across Australia and New Zealand.

GovHack is a government supported international competition that encourages anyone interested in data to get together and work out innovate ways to share and analyse data for the benefit of the greater community.

The TAFE Web, Digital Media and Networking students competed nationally against representatives from major companies like Amazon, InfoSys and other industry experts.

South Regional TAFE Managing Director Sue Lapham congratulated the students on their recognition and their commitment to the challenge.

“These events complement the training we provide so it’s fantastic to see the students recognised for their innovation by industry groups at a national level.”

Bunbury TAFE student group Wenergy WA received honourable mentions at GovHack state and national level.

GovHack is open to all members of the community and Bunbury participants The Henderson Family also won at the state level.

South Regional TAFE lecturer Allison Coleman attended the awards ceremony and said she was extremely impressed with the students holding their own against large organisations and industry experts.

“The students’ ideas and projects have been recognised at such a high level. To me this demonstrates that we are preparing the students for the workplace to solve problems.”

Lecturer Jacob Edmondson said the technical skills of the students had shone through with great enthusiasm shown in all areas.

“The level of what they achieved was very impressive,” he said.

South Regional TAFE is planning on participating in the GovHack event again in 2020. The lecturers will be looking to encourage participation from a variety of student training areas.
