For international student Elodie Guichard, studying community services in regional Western Australia has been far more than a career change - it has been a life‑shaping experience built on connection, compassion and belonging.
Originally from Réunion Island, a French overseas territory between Madagascar and Mauritius, Elodie grew up with a rich dual cultural background.
In September 2019, she arrived in Australia on a working holiday visa. Like many international visitors, she came seeking new experiences, but she didn’t expect the profound sense of welcome she would feel - particularly during one of the most challenging periods in recent history.
The strength of community she experienced was unlike anything she had known. “In Australia, people really rely on community especially in regional areas. I felt included and accepted. It made me want to stay.”
That sense of belonging, combined with the compassion she witnessed throughout the pandemic, sparked her interest in community services. “With community services, you’re working for people, and you can really have an impact.”
She began researching courses through TAFE International Western Australia(opens in a new tab) . After reviewing available programs and reading student testimonials, she knew she had found the right pathway. The final decision came down to location, and Albany immediately stood out. “It looked like a really nice town so, I decided to go for it.”
Returning to study after time away from formal education brought its challenges. Balancing assessments, work and daily life required adjustment, but Elodie says the support she received at South Regional TAFE Albany made all the difference.
“I found so much support, from student services, the lecturers, counselling, everyone,” she says. “For international students especially, it’s important to know someone is there for you.”
As part of her Certificate III in Community Services, Elodie completed volunteer hours at Hawthorn House in Albany, supporting people living with dementia. What began as a course requirement quickly became a passion. She later completed her work placement at the same organisation, gaining hands‑on experience across the year.
Her advice to other students is simple: embrace volunteering. “Go with an open heart and open mind. It’s such a great experience, and it can lead to incredible opportunities.”
Supporting vulnerable members of the community, including people living with disability or mental illness, has now become Elodie’s driving motivation. What she values most about community services is empowerment: helping people participate fully in society and encouraging them to move beyond the limitations they may place on themselves.
Elodie has since relocated to Geraldton to continue her studies, with plans to complete a Diploma of Community Services and gain further experience working in Australia. Whether her future sees her staying or eventually returning to France, she is determined to carry Australian community practices with her.
“The level of service here is incredibly high” she said. “Even if I go back home, I’ll be proud to take this knowledge and way of working with me.”
Reflecting on her journey, Elodie encourages others considering studying in Western Australia to take the leap. “It’s a challenge, going back to school and creating a new routine, but it’s totally worth it.”
She credits South Regional TAFE, TAFE International WA, her lecturers and placement providers with helping her find not just a qualification, but a fulfilling career path. “I’ve found something I love. I’m thriving.”
