Surveying students help map graves of veterans

South Regional TAFE surveying students are assisting the Shire of Capel and the Capel Cemetery group with an exciting new project mapping out the locations of World War I and World War II veterans buried at the Capel Cemetery. The Shire plans to upload the information to an interactive website.

The students are using the experience and skills they have gained from their course to survey the grave and match the grave number with a person and their collection of biographies or other archived items.

The project will enable the Shire to develop an intra-map site for the cemetery so that people from all over the world will be able to search the map online for the location of the veterans. People who are searching for more information about a relative or friend buried in the cemetery, or those who are researching a family tree, can find other information about the veteran such as photos and biographies, along with the exact location of their grave site, all in the one place.

Surveying Lecturer Sara Plunkett said that this was a fantastic project for the students to be involved in and enabled them to use a number of skills.

“This is an exciting experience for our students. They get to work with a client, put in place a number of their data collection techniques, manage a project and expand on their GIS data management skills, all while helping a volunteer organisation.

“We are fortunate to have these opportunities to work with the community and assist with important projects that will make a difference,” Ms Plunkett said.

The Capel Cemetery group was formed a number of years ago and the volunteers have been piecing together the biographies of the veterans buried in the Cemetery. The surveying students’ projects will help link these stories to the grave sites.

Shire of Capel CEO Ian McCabe said: “This is a great example of community partnerships delivering for local heritage.

“The use of mapping technology develops local capabilities in a real and meaningful way and the Shire of Capel is excited at the participation of students from South Regional TAFE.”
