The workshop provides participants with the knowledge and skills to effectively identify hazards, and assess and control risks arising from manual tasks. Recognising that the participants’ roles may only be to contribute to this process, the workshop also discusses the employer’s obligations towards involving workers in this process.
This workshop forms part of the requirements for manual tasks training as outlined in the Commission for Occupational Safety and Health Code of practice: Manual tasks (2010) It is not designed to replace practical or task specific training, but instead should be provided together with practical training.
The Code explains that after training, participants should be able to recognise manual handling risks in tasks, and in consultation, decide the best way to minimise them.

This 5 day OSH Representatives course is for anyone who is or is about to become an Occupational Safety and Health Representative in your organisation.

Representatives from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply as there are no formal pre-requisites or qualifications required for a person to participate in and be successful in undertaking the functions of a safety and health representative.

The 5 day WorkSafe Western Australia accredited course for OSH Representatives will provide representatives with information and skills to enable them to effectively carry out their role as "representatives" of employees, and as defined under Section 33 of the Act.

The course is specifically designed to achieve the objectives of the Act offering a balanced approach with emphasis on cooperation and consultation and representatives' participation in the development and formulation of safety and health policy and procedures at the workplace.

This course covers:

  • how to apply the legislative requirements to the workplace
  • how to apply the principles of Risk Management by participating in and conducting a workplace inspection
  • how to apply the techniques of accident investigation
  • how to assist the employer in the development of accident prevention controls and systems
  • how to effectively communicate with the employer and employees on safety and health matters

Certification

On completion of this course, participants will receive a Statement of Attendance from South Regional TAFE.

This is a non accredited course, however participants who would like to achieve formal recognition of the skills gained through course participation can apply for five units of competence from BSB30715 Certificate III in Work Health and Safety. This will require you to submit a number of work place assignments that will then be formally assessed by an SRT assessor who will make a decision about competency being deemed. Information about the units and assessment process will be provided at the commencement of the representatives training. Additional fees apply.

This skill set is aimed at those who operate a small business or are seeking an administration support position in a small business. The Operating a Small Business Skill Set will prepare you with the skills and knowledge to get you job ready or to improve how you operate a business of your own. You’ll learn how to design and produce business documents and publications, digitally design and develop text-based documents, develop spreadsheets through the use of both cloud-based and noncloud based applications, identify financial requirements of a business including profit targets, cash flow projections and strategies to gather financial support, and understand workplace health and safety (WHS) legislation and its application to safe work practices. It even covers how to create and build a social networking presence using social media tools and applications.
