Residential Building Drafting

Builders are the key to coordinating the construction or renovation of houses and commercial buildings.Builders are involved in every aspect of the project from interpreting the plans, to quotation, through to organising various trade sub-contractors to complete the build. As a drafter, you will learn how to convert an idea into clear, dimensioned drawings, preparing the builder with the necessary information for construction.

This qualification applies to building designers who undertake building design projects covered by the Building Code of Australia (BCA), except Construction Type A buildings. Building designers may specialise in residential projects, including new buildings, heritage restorations and additions or renovations; or they may also undertake commercial and industrial projects, such as factories, motels, offices, restaurants, retail or service outlets and warehouses.

The course is a level 1 introduction to Archicad, a building modeller used extensively for architectural design and documentation in a 2D and 3D environment. As far as possible, the course is delivered to match individual participant’s aspirations and real life applications.

Delivery will suit those wishing to learn Computer Aided Design skills in order to improve productivity and career opportunities. Previous participants who found the course worthwhile include landscapers, builders, trades people, building and interior designers, fabricators, owner builders, and planners. It is also a good way to ascertain if an associated qualification is worthwhile pursuing.

- Introduction to CAD and how it’s used for wide range of architectural and engineering projects
- Basic 2D drafting and getting to know how the program works
- Using the program to produce a 3D model – walls, slabs, doors and windows, roofs, terrain
- Getting the model on to paper – elevations, sections and plan views
- Adding dimensions and text to complete a working drawing
- Creating realistic 3D images using different building materials

MAB11 Introduction to Revit Architecture

This is a level 1 introduction to Revit 2018 Architecture, a powerful building modeler used extensively for architectural design, documentation and rendering in 2D and 3D.
This unit supports the work of drafters who assist and work under the supervision and instruction of architects, building designers and other personnel such as home sustainability assessors.
It covers installing BIM-capable design software and applying its functions and options to create, name and save project files and templates for different types of building design projects.

Skills and knowledge elements include:

    Building model set up, levels and grids
    Basic building tools (walls, windows and doors)
    Create floors, ceilings, roofs and stairs
    Add component features
    Basic editing tools
    Navigation tools
    Creating views, sections and elevations
    3D views, cameras, materials, sun study and rendering
    Set up project templates

Participants gain hands-on experience using the various modelling and documentation commands within Revit and should complete the required tasks & assignments in order to achieve competency in this course.

This qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to prepare drawings, estimates and plans and liaise with architects, builders and contractors of residential buildings.

You will learn how to present and document building projects using both manual and computer-aided drafting techniques. You will learn about building materials, construction methods and the social and environmental aspects of residential construction projects. Part of this qualification will involve project-based learning where you will work with an industry mentor and apply the skills and knowledge you have learned.

During the course you will cover the theory, underpinning knowledge and practical skills required to produce documentation suitable for gaining a building permit and for the on-site construction of Class 1 and Class 10 Residential Housing projects in accordance with the provisions of Volume 2 of the Building Codes of Australia.
