Civil Construction

Acquire skills in civil detail drafting and the underpinning skills associated with civil design, such as engineering mathematics, statics and strength of materials. Learn about project and risk management, preparing detailed designs of concrete, timer and steel stuctures, managing information or knowledge based systems and applying basic engineering principles and concepts. Civil construction includes specialist occupations in bituminous surfacing bridge construction, pipe laying, road construction, road marking, tunnel construction, timber bridge construction, and other civil construction general occupations.

Description

The civil construction industry has seen many large projects underway across Perth and in regional Western Australia. The Work in Civil Construction Skill Set offers a range of both entry level jobs and career development opportunities. This skill set focuses on working safely on construction sites so that you can understand and follow mandatory work, health and safety requirements in accordance with legislation,
including the safe use of electricity and identification of hazardous materials and basic risk control measures and emergency procedures.
You will also learn how to operate specialised equipment such as scissor and boom lifts and elevated work platforms (EWPs), undertake minor concreting and rendering tasks and perform minor repairs, plumbing work on roofing structures, carry out levelling operations, and install trench support.

Certification

On successful completion of this course, students will receive a statement of attainment for the following units

CPCCCM2008B Erect and dismantle restricted height scaffold
CPCCCM2010B Work safely at heights
CPCCCM3001 Operate elevated work platforms up to 11 metres
CPCCOHS2001A Apply WHS requirements, policies and procedures in the construction industry

Fees

Student who meet one or more of the following eligibility requirements will be eligible for fee free (course and resource fee) training.
Eligibility requirements

  • Persons aged 15—24 years at the time of enrolment (excluding school students)
  • Secondary school-aged persons who are not enrolled at school.
  • Persons receiving the JobSeeker or JobKeeper payment.
  • Persons and dependents of persons receiving the Youth Allowance, AUSTUDY or ABSTUDY.
  • Persons and dependents of persons holding:
    • a Pensioner Concession Card or Health Care Card; or
    • a Repatriation Health Benefits Card issued by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
  • Dependents of persons who are inmates of a custodial institution.

Students who do not meet one or more of the criteria listed above are able to enrol in the skill sets and pay the applicable course and resource fees in accordance with the Department of Training and Workforce Development’s current Fees and Charges Policy, available at dtwd.wa.gov.au.
