Trails are an important inclusion within the WA tourism industry. This skill set will upskill learners so they can take bush walks safely while conserving the local environment.

This course remains FEE FREE in 2025! The course fees are 100 per cent subsidised by the WA State Government for WA residents.

Study Mode On Campus

Each week classroom delivery is followed by undertaking a bushwalk. Students learn to bushwalk safely and environmentally soundly in the natural environment on marked trails. Students learn about specific equipment, suitable clothing and footwear, waterproof gear, safe manual handling techniques, obstacles, steps, slopes, maintinaing pace, negotiating hazards, handling emergencies, managing participants, communication protocols, using maps and guides, looking after the natural enviroment, not impacting cultural and heritage sites, permits and permissions.

  • Are you working in the Tourism Industry and wish to elevate your skills and knowledge?

Then this is the course for you.

To make an informed choice about the suitability of this course, please consider the essential skills and knowledge below.  You must:

  • Love the outdoors.
  • Be physically fit and can walk on formed earthen tracks, some of which could be unstable or have natural obstacles such as roots, small logs, steeps and slopes.
  • Be comfortable with nature (e.g., insects, spiders, reptiles) and environmental conditions (e.g., sun, heat, rain, wind).
  • Enjoy sharing stories about local areas, history, heritage and other cultures.
  • Have Good time-management.
  • Possess good problem-solving skills and the ability to respond to immediate safety risks.
  • Show well-developed communication and listening skills to liaise and work with a range of people.

You will learn to bushwalk safely and environmentally soundly in the natural environment on marked trails. You will learn about specific equipment, suitable clothing and footwear, waterproof gear, safe manual handling techniques, obstacles, steps, slopes, maintaining pace, negotiating hazards, handling emergencies, managing participants, communication protocols, using maps and guides, looking after the natural environment, not impacting cultural and heritage sites, permits and permissions.

Time Commitment  You will need to allocate appropriate time to complete this course. This includes attending classes on-site and/or online as outlined in the study mode; undertake independent study outside of class hours, including private study, assessment preparation, and research to successfully complete this course; and complete assessment requirements of this course.

  • Respectful Communication - Interact with people from diverse backgrounds, share ideas effectively and build trust. Show social and cultural sensitivity.
  • Teamwork and Safety – Collaborate with others, show them respect, and be open to feedback. Participate in safe work practices.
  • Problem Solving - There is always a solution. How do you respond to a challenge? If you spot a problem, we encourage you to ask questions, clarify as needed, and respond appropriately within your training.
  • Initiative - Stay motivated, take proactive steps, and seek help when necessary. Source and use information on the tourism and travel industry.
  • Planning - Manage time well. Knowing how to prioritise and completing your tasks efficiently are crucial for your success.
  • Self-Management - Reflect on your performance. Reflection is a powerful tool for growth and success as a student at South Regional TAFE. Being a professional in the workplace can mean learning when to accept responsibility for your failures as often as your successes. This is how we learn!
