Assist Clients with Medication Skill Set

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare for and provide medication assistance and complete medication documentation. It also involves supporting a client to self-administer medication.

This unit applies to community services and health workers with authority in their state or territory to assist with the administration of medication.

Students will learn (within their scope of practice):
• How to prepare to assist with medication
• How to prepare the client for assistance with administration of medication
• How to support clients with administration of medication
• How to handle medication contingencies
• How to complete medication distribution and documentation

Students will require access to a workplace to demonstrate the assessment requirements of this unit inc: Providing assistance with medication to at least 5 different clients according to their care plans - https://training.gov.au/Training/Details/HLTHPS006
To access most workplaces, students will need to meet the following requirements:
• Proof of current Vaccination for COVID & FLU
• National Police Clearance Check
• Working with Children Check
• NDIS Worker Screening Check
• RAT testing may be required for work placement
Students will require reading and numeracy levels to read dosage instructions and calculate correct dosage of information.

The course delivery runs over two (2) days and students are expected to attend SR TAFE Esperance campus for face-to-face delivery. Practical assessments to follow in the workplace at a time suitable for the employer and the student. There is an expectation that students will need to complete work outside of their timetabled classes and attendance at classroom sessions is important to ensure all training is received and for successful completion of the unit.

  • The course fee cap applicable to Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas only applies during the current calendar year, so fees might differ for students enrolling in semester 2.
  • VET Student Loans Eligible Courses and Caps may be subject to changes implemented by the Australian Government.
  • Course information and fees are subject to change without notice.
  • Depending on your circumstances, payment options may include paying fees via instalments or applying for assistance because of financial hardship.
