BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)

Some courses at our Albany and Bunbury Campuses are moving to BYOD. This means that you are to bring and use your own laptop or tablet to class.

Check below to see which courses are BYOD-ready.

Definitions

BYOD: Bring Your Own Device - Student-owned device (laptop or tablet) for educational purposes.
PMD: Personal Mobile Device – laptop, tablet, smartphone.
LLND: Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital skills assessment.
MFA: Multi-Factor Authentication – required for accessing SRTAFE systems.

Device (laptop or tablet) minimum specifications

  • Wi-Fi 5 or higher and be able to connect to SRTAFE Wi-Fi
  • Windows 11 or macOS with Microsoft 365 compatibility
  • Minimum of 8 GB of RAM

Guidelines to BYOD

  • Device is to be fully charged for each day of class.
  • A second PMD is required e.g., Smartphone, to enable MFA.
  • SRTAFE is not liable for data loss or PMD damage.
  • Compliance with privacy and cybersecurity laws is required.
  • Maintain antivirus protection and data backups on device.
  • Microsoft 365 is available and provided to all students throughout the duration of enrolment.
  • Use PMDs responsibly and in accordance with SRTAFE policies when linked to SRTAFE Wi-Fi

After full enrolment, you can access your SRTAFE accounts on your BYOD. Please allow up to 24 hours for activation. If you experience any access issues, please contact your lecturer, The Student Hub (which includes the Learning Resource Centre and Student Services) for support.

Please take the time to explore the helpful instructions for getting yourself set up as a new student, logging in for the first time, handy guides to the key portals you will use, and guidance about how to make the most out of being a student at SRTAFE.

If you have any concerns about bringing your own device, please contact the relevant campus T: 08 6371 8888 E: albany@srtafe.edu.wa.au or T: 08 6371 3174 E: bunbury@srtafe.edu.wa.au. There are limited day use loan laptops available from the Albany and Bunbury Learning Resource Centres.

SRTAFE Learning Resource Centre staff and lecturers will assist you with –

  • Connecting to SRTAFE Wi-Fi and email.
  • Assistance with Blackboard and Microsoft 365 setup.
  • Troubleshooting login to the student Portal and MFA issues.
  • Guidance on compatible software and device setup.

A LLND assessment may be conducted before your BYOD course starts to ensure the most appropriate support strategy is developed for you.
Digital Literacy Support, including Skills for Study, is provided as needed.

Printing

PMD’s are not able to be directly connected to SRTAFE printers. This is being addressed. Current solutions include:

  • BYOD to have PDF capabilities. Load PDF data onto a USB, then plug and print from printer.
  • Log onto one of the SRTAFE digital devices to print documents. Desktop computers are available for use in the Learning Resource Centres.
